Snow Peak Amenity Dome — 3 Year Review

We are car campers at heart and we were not looking for an ultra light or compact tent. We wanted something big enough to live in. When we visited the Portland Snow Peak showroom the Snow Peak Amenity Dome caught our attention. We immediately liked the large size, height and large vestibule. Snow Peak has a reputation for great design and build quality. So we decided to buy one.

The Snow Peak Amenity Dome comes in three sizes for 2, 4 or 6 people. We selected the Amenity Dome 4 tent, a square shape with a nearly 9 foot by 9-foot floor. It comfortably holds 3 people and a dog and is a little cramped with 4. It is by no means a light tent or very compact, but for car camping that doesn’t matter. The vestibule is the main feature and is large enough to cook under in a pinch.

At the current $350 price it’s situated in the middle to the higher side of comparable 4 person tents. If you are looking for a beautifully designed tent with a large vestibule this might be a good choice for your camping adventures.

We purchased this tent in December 2014 and since then we’ve slept in it around 200 nights. We’ve put it through hot and dry deserts and cold and wet conditions. We have pitched it and taken it down in high winds. Living in the Pacific Northwest we’ve used it in plenty of rain. We have had a good chance to take advantage of the spacious vestibule and test it as a place to not just sleep in but live in while waiting for hard rains to pass.

Out of the box, Snow Peak includes, the tent, a rainfly, 4 poles, stakes, rope, and a pole repair and fabric repair kit. The footprint is an extra purchase. The tent technically can be setup by one person, but it takes longer. With two people and some practice it can be setup very quickly.

The rainfly clips down to the tent pole locations with plastic buckles allowing for easy tightening of the fly. The vestibule must be staked out or it will not stay up. If it’s going to be exceptionally windy or rainy the rainfly has numerous tie outs to keep the rain away and the tent on the ground. On the back of the tent, a smaller vestibule is available that allows you to throw some gear outside the tent and keep it dry.

The fabric materials used are very standard polyester with good water resistance. They are by no means lightweight but they are not heavy either. The entire tent with poles weighs in at 19.6 lbs. The poles are a standard Duralumin that slide into fabric sleeve and also use plastic pole clips.

Snow Peak is an amazing brand. They make beautiful products out of good materials. The Snow Peak Amenity Dome has served us well and given us almost 3 years worth of comfortable camping. At the current $350 price it is in the middle to high end of the price range. Given the beautiful design, good quality and spaciousness of the tent it is a great tent.
